Do bloggers and readers make better players?

Too often random questions are asked in general chat – simple, easily answered questions. And it makes me wonder; am I the only one that occasionally does and alt+tab and actually looks stuff up?

Moreover, when patch notes come out, much like the upcoming patch... we all talk about the changes well in advanced within the blogging community. We listen to each others input, discuss how it will effect the various classes, give opinions on changing our view point on things, etc. It baffles me when patches come out and for a full day people in /g are saying, “OMG! Now does this!”

*facepalm*

“Do you spend any time outside of the game learning how to better yourself as a player, planning ahead for next-steps within the game?”

The evident answer is, “No.”

I feel that within the blogging community we take the time to read and expand our knowledge of game mechanics. It also appears to me that bloggers communicate more effectively inside and outside of the game, know what is going on the WoW-related sites, have great sources and experience locating new sources of information….. Does this make us better players?

I wouldn’t say this makes us better players, but it at least makes us more knowledgable than people not informing themselves of all that stuff.

I think, ultimately, it does. Everything that makes us research and provide us with information about the game and its mechanics will ultimately make us better players. Not necessarily the BEST players out there, but, still, better players than we would if we didn’t write and/or research.

If you define a ‘better player’ as someone who takes the time to think about WoW outside of just being in the game pwning n00bs (i.e class research, browsing the wiki, being prepared for changes and being part of a larger community) then I think it’s less “we’re better players because we blog” than it is “we blog because we’re better players.”

The people who take the time to do out-of-actual-gameplay activities like reading upcoming patch notes or thinking about lore or what have you are more inclined to do things like blog.

Some bloggers are deeply into theorycrafting, strategies and stuff, doing tons of research. I suspect they’re pretty awesome players (even though theory is one thing and practice another… :) ) When it comes to me I blog because I enjoy writing and thinking about wow. But seriously I don’t think it makes me any better at the game – it rather takes time that I could have spent in game, doing “useful” stuff.

Ultimately, play is about execution. You may have the right spec, and the right gear and the right macro’s and know the strategy and loot table for every boss in Naxx… but if you can’t stay out of a Shadow Fissure then all that knowledge is for naught.

Taking the diplomatic stance, I will say that research and blogging and the interaction that goes into it will definitely help your game… but it doesn’t necessarily mean that we are better players than people that don’t.
