What class would you be?

April 24, 2009 :: Posted by - Stompalina :: Category - Class Discussion

As a member of the blogging community, I am active in following and discovering new an exciting viewpoints from other bloggers. Blog Azeroth is a friendly forum where WoW bloggers talk about their site, share leanings, and topics!

Saresa of Destructive Reach rounds up the Shared Topics end of the site where an interesting idea is shared and discussed among fellow bloggers. This weeks topic is:

“If I could be any class IRL,
which would I be?”

Stompalina:
If I were to become a class in real life, I think I would want to be a warlock. They have the darkest, creepiest, most morbid gear. You can’t beat the baby heads on the tier 6 shoulders. Additionally, they have minions to do most of their dirty work.

Hafrot:
I absolutely would be a Death Knight. The whole idea of forgetting my life before a certain age holds some appeal and who could pass up on the ability to bring someone to life as a rotting ghoul? The voice might be a problem but chicks dig dudes with piercing blue eyes. /bow chicka wow wow

Taffybag:

After my rough and tumble upbringing as a pick pocket on the lonely, unforgiving streets of East London it’s easy for me to say the class I would chose; I would be a Rogue. Sap and blind would be ever so useful when attempting to liberate the overstuffed coin purses of the landed gentry. And should i get caught whilst attempting to pilfer said pockets, I would vanish, cheap shot, kidney punch and then skulk off into the night, leaving my victim in the shadows.

What class would YOU be in real life?

In the Blizzard hot seat!

April 21, 2009 :: Posted by - Stompalina :: Category - Other

Hey Rawrcast Fans,

For all of our complaints against Blizzard it has to be said that they really do a fine job with WoW, and I’m sure the 14 million or so subscribers would agree with that.

However, there are some areas where Blizzard could do with a kick up the arse so here’s your chance to share what you would do if you were in charge of the WoW franchise. I’ll post my thoughts here and I encourage you to post up yours on the discussion forums.

Make the game free to play
Wow has been running for over four years now with a steady rise in subscribers that must finally be seeing a plateau reached. What better way to stimulate further sales of the game and push your subscriber base that little further than by offering a subscription free service? Would it be wise though to seriously consider slaying the cash cow…

I’m sure Blizzard would argue that they spend millions of dollars every month maintaining their servers and generally managing their game and their staff but there are plenty of examples of free to play MMOs that yield great success. Guild Wars stands out as just one example of a model Blizzard could look to adopt as WoW moves into its golden age.

Box sales of expansion packs keeps GW in business and there’s no reason to think Blizzard couldn’t reap the same success, especially if they took up my next suggestion.

Offer their code to the community
Ok this might not be as easy as I’m about to imagine it is but for the sake of discussion lets run with this.

Look at the recent success of Little Big Planet on the PS3, where players create their own levels and share them with the world. Imagine if something similar was done with WoW where the community could contribute their own quest lines and if they had the skills perhaps present their own little piece of Azeroth. No doubt lore fanatics would wince at the idea of some plebian messing with the sacred continent of Azeroth, but that’s fine, these additions aren’t going to be for everyone.

In fact if we consider LBP the suggestion there is that 90% of the content is rubbish and a tiny fraction of the maps are actually any good. For this to work then a system would need to be implemented that allowed the community to rate the Modders and their work. Just like you see on youtube, the good stuff rises to the top whilst the tripe sinks out of sight.

Whatever the case there is so much potential for the community to express itself and have some fun in WoW. Be it creating a new land mass to explore, populated with the bizarre and weird creatures of your imagination, or a simple quest line for family and friends to jump into. The opportunity for parody would be awesome and we’d see an endless stream of new content to delve into.

Personally I’d develop a quest line titled ’80 days around the world’ which would see quests appearing on a daily basis that demands you visit each of the zones and photograph land marks in the area, encouraging players to explore the many nooks and crannies in Azeroth and see the awesome artwork that Blizzard have produced over the last four years. What would you do with your own piece of Azeroth…

Give us Classic Realms
Personally this isn’t something I particularly care for but I recognise that a number of people really do want to see Classic realms implemented so why not give it to them.

‘It’s too niche’ says Blizzard.

Fair enough, but think about the math here, even if just 1% of your total audience actually took up the opportunity to roll on a classic realm that would equal approx. 140,000 people – is that really such a poor number to serve? Even if you were to halve that number I’m certain you’d have enough players to populate at least one server, if not exceed the population cap.

It seems silly to me to not at least experiment with this idea and throw up a single server and see how it got on. If it flopped, well no harm done Blizzard could say ‘we told you so’ and close down a single server. If it took off then it would be just one server out of hundreds, surely not that big a cost and it serves a niche of the population with what they want.

I could be completely wrong here and perhaps this is far more effort than I think it is. Or maybe Blizzard are wary of giving in to such demands as it could set a precedent that don’t want to be ransomed to in the future…whatever their causes I still think this is worth further consideration.

Look after your customers, especially when you have the money to play with these experiments.

This wraps up my thoughts on what I’d do if I was in charge at Blizzard HQ. Share your thoughts here and have some fun with what you would do.

Emeny.

Immersing yourself into MMO Lingo

April 15, 2009 :: Posted by - Stompalina :: Category - Other

Hey Rarwcast Fans,

It’s a real honour to be given a chance to regularly contribute to the site so I’ve funnelled my enthusiasm into this effort and I hope that it pays off.

I took a fancy to looking into the variety of words and terms we casually throw around when we’re playing WoW (and MMOs in general) and thought it would be interesting to present to you guys a selection of such words that I like the sound of, and/or I like the way the community has adopted a word and completely changed its meaning.
For example, one that got the cut from my list was ‘tank’. As a verb in general use you might ‘tank’ in a gambling situation that sees you lose all your funds. I don’t believe you ever actually ‘tank’ something though as you do in WoW. I doubt anyone in a military situation commands his troops to ‘tank’ that sniper or ‘tank’ that umm…tank.
It should be noted that the research I’ve done for this piece has been entirely casual, so what I present should not be read as absolute fact nor strictly the only definition that exists. I’ve had fun compiling some facts and sharing my thoughts on these words, so please don’t quote me or slam my efforts!

Anyway, without any further ado here is my brief study of MMO lingo:

Gank verb to gang up on a player and annihilate them, often repeatedly [though this is more commonly known as ‘corpse camping’]

Also, this word is often used out of the correct context where one player feels they were unfairly picked on by another.
Etymology: It seems that the word gank is commonly used as a term to ‘steal’ where it can be applied to any act of theft but is generally associated as an act involving violence. The rap group N.W.A used the term in their lyric ‘Gankers got the fake but you can get the real’ supporting the evidence that this words roots are in Black American culture.

Discussion: The MMO community has adopted this word to describe the act of a gang of players getting the jump on a lone target out and about in the world. There is some suggestion that the term is an abbreviation of the phrase ‘gang kill’ though there is also an equal amount of derision aimed at this theory.

I rather like the idea of the abbreviation, even if it isn’t strictly true. The way the English language can be played with to create new words is a wonder in itself and the term ‘gank’ is a classic example of this process. Even the sound of the word ‘gank’ is satisfying to speak out loud and suits the frustration felt by the player being attacked. Its rhyme with words like ‘dank’ and ‘rank’ provoke that feeling of being rained on at the weekend!

I’d find it hard to apply any other word that fits the action here, so long live Gank!

Twinkverb to apply high level enhancements to low level gear in an effort to out-perform players at the same low level.

Etymology: A number of sources suggest that this word has its roots in the gay community, a slang term used to describe a young, good looking guy!

Discussion: I bet that surprised a few of you and might make you think twice about bragging being such a great ‘twink’ the next time you’re in game ;-) Where ever this word came from I have absolutely no idea how it got into the MMO community and why it was so quickly adopted to describe an overpowered, low level player.

Some suggest that the term twink refers to a sugar daddy looking after a younger guy which suits the idea that your high level character is taking care of your low level toon, though the connotations are a little disturbing! I could find no compelling evidence though to suggest how this term fell into common MMO usage…

Perhaps the term is more innocent than we realise and it simply comes down to an abbreviation of the word ‘twinkle’ which could be used to describe your character once it has been decked out in various enchants. Somehow boasting about your twink seems more masculine than presenting your ‘Twinkie’ or your ‘twinkler’.

Settling on an alternative term is no easy feat. I like the idea of ‘buttress’ which gives the connotation of lathering a player up with gear, and when abbreviated gives you the opportunity to boast about your ‘awesome butt’! ‘Prop’ seems appropriate too and has some potential at being punchy enough to catch on but I won’t be pushing for either suggestion really! Twinks will be flouncing around for quite some time yet.

Grind noun hard dull work: relief from the daily grind

MMO meaning: Here’s an example of a word we all know and use and it being applied in an unadulterated way in the MMO community. The word grind describes the act of repeated killing the same mob over and over again in an effort to gather mats or level your character.

The process can be seen as such a ‘chore’ which in itself is another great word that could easily fall into the MMO phrase book. ‘I had to chore my way through five hundred beasts’ maybe isn’t as aggressive sounding as ‘grind’ though, which also implies the use of tools to get the job done which suits the idea of a warrior hacking his way through endless creatures.

Whatever the case I’m sure MMO players will be complaining about their daily grind for years to come.

Buff – verb [with obj.] to polish (something)

MMO meaning: To enhance, augment; to increase the stats on yours, or another character.

Discussion: I could be accused here of picking out the literal meaning of the term ‘buff’ in the dictionary and not looking at its variety of other uses such as to be a ‘film buff’. In fact, I deliberately overlooked one use of the word which I intend to get into as I believe it’s an appropriate indication of this term’s roots in our MMO usage.

To be physically well built is to be considered as being ‘buff’ which I guess is the meaning the MMO community took to the word when applying it. I’ve ‘buffed’ my character suggests that you’ve enhanced yourself in an effort to be at your peak, and also underlines a little bit of an ego trip which isn’t entirely inappropriate. There’s no doubt many players take pride in enhancing their character and those around them so being ‘buff’ rings true in my opinion.

Buff is also a short and punchy word, which seems to be a key element to a term catching on. An alternative word might be ‘beef’ which is as equally short and punchy and implies that you’ve ‘beefed up’ your character. I don’t suppose the Taurens would take too kindly to such a phrase though so I wonder if that’s why it didn’t catch on…
Wipe verb [with obj.] clean or dry (something) by rubbing its surface with a cloth, piece of paper, or one’s hand.

MMO meaning: To have an entire party/raid die and be unable to resurrect inside the instance without visiting a graveyard.
Discussion: If one member of your party can escape death then you’re free to claim that you didn’t actually wipe! I’ve often had hunters feign death or more recently night elves finding a dark corner somewhere to shadow meld so that the group can boast how we cleared an instance with no wipes!

It doesn’t seem like too wild a guess to suggest that this term comes about from the phrase ‘to wipe out’ which is often associated with surf boarders being flung from their boards.
The term suggests an element of drama involved in the act which is more than appropriate when the situation involves a tiny gnome mages over aggroing and pulling a gigantic creature into the middle of the raid where he proceeds to stomp on everyone within range! Your Ventrillo server is suddenly full of curses and complaints and your raid leader dejectedly states ‘well that’s a wipe’.

So there you have it. I could have chosen a whole host of words but for the sake of brevity I narrowed my choice to a handful of the more popular and on reflection rather punchy little words. I’d love to hear which terms you enjoy using or any phrases that you’ve found have made an amusing/interesting transition from real life into WoW life.
Catch you later,
The Brit who is ‘automatically hot’

Rawrcast Vidcast 1: Talking Shop with the Spawn

April 14, 2009 :: Posted by - Stompalina :: Category - Class Discussion

This morning we got up like every other Monday, and sent the spawn off to school. Thirty minutes later, the kid returned home covered in sweat and funk. Ends up there was no school today. Epic parental fail at reading the school calender.

So, we used the day to run some chores and see a movie. I documented our World of Warcraft discussion in the car. Lots of fun.
