Rawrcast is going the FULL MONTY!

August 18, 2009 :: Posted by - Stompalina :: Category - BlizzCon

I recently went and purchased the live streaming option for Blizzcon and I began to think about the possibilities that this afforded me. Most people don’t opt for internet streaming for forty bucks because, well, most people are smarter than me. (Or they’re going all hippy on us and “fighting the man” because Blizz is charging for the event at all) I came up with the idea that I could keep a running commentary on the ‘con and what exactly was going on in the Anaheim Convention Center. So, with the help of our favorite Tauren shaman, we set up a friendfeed account that is now linked with the new Rawrcast twitter account. I’ll be watching the entire stream and commenting on the news, and breaking down information as soon as the people at BlizzCon are hearing about it. Keep your eyes fixed on twitter, or head straight over to the new Rawrcast friendfeed site here. We’ll be keeping you up-to-date with all the biggest news from the event with entertaining insight and smart coverage in the traditional Rawrcast fashion!

Also, make sure to tune in to the special THREE HOUR RAWRCON: Blizzcon Satruday Show podcast live at 5 p.m. EST (4 p.m. CSTl)!

EDIT!

BUFF THIS ARTICLE on buff.net

As soon as I posted this, the BlizzCon schedule was revealed here. It looks like I will be ‘on air’ from 10:30 a.m. (PST) to 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. It will be a micro-blogging marathon for the millenia!

How Will the Tauren Evolve?

August 18, 2009 :: Posted by - Stompalina :: Category - Cataclysm

****Spoiler Speculation****

As many of you already know, data mining information and official leaks are occurring concerning the new expansion. Plague over at Cataclysm’s Edge has some thoughts on the lore link between the races and the classes they will be able to play. He isn’t the only speculating on links; Stomp and Brutalize hit on races learning new classes on this weekend’s podcast.

Plague does an excellent job of justifying new class combination, but one pressing question remains, and it concerns Tauren paladins. Trolls have shown an aptitude for shifting both in Zul’Aman and Gundrak so druidic arts aren’t far-fetched. Dwarves are descendants of the earthen; why would they not posses the talent to speak with the elements as shaman? Gnomes have already delved into shadow magic as warlocks so why not seek advice on learning the talents of a shadow priest and, subsequently, learn to smite with holy magic?

Each of these class combination can look to another member of their faction for sagely wisdom. The dwarves can travel to the Exodar and study under Nobundo if they wish to become shaman. Moonglade is likely to welcome trolls as potential students if Hamuul Runetotem speaks on their behalf and they vow to forsake some of their more primitive habits like cannibalism. Unlike Thrall who may look the other way if a troll munches on some humanoid meat, Cenarion Circle will not be so forgiving for such a transgression. Druidic trolls are one step closer to the redemption I have hoped they would find.

After you wade through all of the information, only one question remains; who will train the Tauren in holy magic?

If Aponi Brightmane is intended to become the first Tauren paladin, how will she grow into a weapon of righteousness? Will she become lost in Northrend and in her darkest hour, An’she will speak to her and confirm the sun is the Yin to the Mu’sha, or Elune, Yang? Will she travel to the Sunwell and confirm it is now empowered my M’uru’s power of the light instead of the arcane as it once was? Will her pilgrimage “rebirth the soul of nation” as Velen prophesied? Does the true redemption of the Blood Elves lie within the Tauren with whom they will share their knowledge of the light to usher in priests and paladins from a once thought simple race? What purpose will all this serve for the Earthmother, and how will it forever change the Tauren?

In case you hadn’t noticed, if all this Tauren paladin talk turns out to be true, I will be rolling one the instant it becomes an option.

Dead or Alive with Aellerian

August 17, 2009 :: Posted by - Stompalina :: Category - PVP

Welcome everyone to the first installment of the dead or alive blog. We will be talking about everything from beginner to advance PvP tactics and news. In this article we will talk about 3.2 and what to expect from this patch and how it effects PvP.

Last week Blizzard let out the most important patch to effect PvP in World of Warcraft since the installment of Arenas. I wanted to take a moment of your time to go over this and point out some points that come with it and how it is effecting you and me. You can check out the patch notes over on the official site for the full report.

Isle of Conquest
The biggest change some may argue is the new battleground: Isle of Conquest. Where the Alliance and Horde are pitted against each other once again to fight over precious resources that will help them inevitably defeat the Lich King himself. Simply put, this battleground is amazing. Wherever you go, there is something to do. The only dull moment I could find in the first 50 games played was running between nodes trying to get the achievements. When you first hop in it all seems a bit overwhelming with the large map. Where do I go? How do I win this? Best idea is to follow everyone else and ask plenty of questions. Once you get used to the battle 3 or 4 times in you should do fine.

Even with all the great things about this battleground there is always a downside. You cant make everyone happy right? The only flaws I can see with this battleground are that both sides immediately go for the hanger. If you control the hanger 100% of the time and have participation from people jumping in, you will most likely win. Also what goes with this strategy is graveyard camping. If the enemy controls your base without capping the keep flag they can possibly control you in the graveyard that is next to your keep thus making you inconsequential to the battle because every 30 seconds you are dying! Even with these 2 small flaws its rare that either happen. You most likely wont control the hanger 100% of the time because the other side is going for it too and if they don’t control the hanger then they wont be camping your graveyard!

Resilience Changes and YOU
That being said, what I believe is the most important change in 3.2 for PvP would be the resilience change. Blizzard has changed resilience from reducing DoT damage, mana drains, critical strike chance, and critical strike damage; to reducing critical strike chance, mana drains, and ALL damage done by players against you. This one change has made resilience THE most important stat in PvP. If you don’t have resilience you are missing out, bottom line. Once again, this change comes with a downside, what is great for most will make someone too great. There are complaints about healers and their ability to survive but it is not an impossible task to take them down. I know as a priest I still die very quickly, and often to melee classes.

BG EXP!
Another major part of this patch for PvP, and I would be silly to not mention it, would be BATTLEGROUND EXPERIENCE! When I first heard this little snippet I was overjoyed. I said to myself “Aellerian, You can finally spend 100% of your time PvPing if you really want to improve your toon.” That is, until I actually put it into effect. If you don’t know, the brackets go from 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, and so on and so forth till you hit 80 when there is a dedicated one end-game level players. The level 10-19 bracket only consists of Warsong Gulch, and it gives hardly any experience for the time spent in the battleground. With games averaging 10-15 minutes and some going to the full 20, I am making only 1 bar per battleground with each level going much slower than questing. On the other hand, once you reach the level that Alterac Valley comes in, you will level quite quickly. The experience that comes from AV is amazing. My rogue is level 77 and going leaps and bounds from Alterac Valley only. My advice, if you want to start PvPing with a new toon, it would be wise to gain experience via questing until level fifty when you can enter Alterac Valley. Between battlegrounds you could do some questing or just kill random mobs to make it go even faster.

Will It Ever End?
Finally I would like to give a little attention to the end of Season 6. There is no official end-date but it has been announced it will be no later than August 25th. At the end of the season your rating, personal rating, and arena points will be reset. Your hidden match making rating will stay the same. There will be a week in between season 6 and 7. So get those games in, get your rating, get your title, and kick ass!

In closing, I will say 3.2 is by far the most important patch to PvP since Burning Crusade. It is a lot to take in and more is still to come. There is another mini-patch coming to fix the little bugs that are out right now with classes and battlegrounds alike. Until then, let us hope that the new movement for PvP improvement will continue and will see great new things in the future!

WTF! Noob? Noobing at levels 35-70

August 15, 2009 :: Posted by - Stompalina :: Category - PVP

For the longest time, battlegrounds have been slowly losing their popularity among the WOW player base. They were either too long, such as Warsong gulch, or they were just too unorganized and chaotic like Alterac Valley. The best rewards from the honor points that you received were PVP gear and for many players it was just not worth it.

The interest level increased with the inclusion of Wintergrasp. It was a much more interesting battleground and along with honor points, you had the ability to gain more experience and make access to Vault of Archavon if your faction had control of Wintergrasp Keep. Some of the players who had given up on the battlegrounds returned for Wintergrasp.

Now, with the patch 3.2 having been released there is even more reason for toons in the 35-70 level range to be entering the battlegrounds. First and foremost is the addition of experience being given to players in the battlegrounds. Now, your kills in these PVP battles will mean something as well as your faction’s ability to win the battle.

I have a friend who has been slowly making his way towards 80, but after 3.2 he was able to do battleground after battleground to level up those last two levels. And for anyone who does not know or remember the last two levels are slow going. You are so close and you have accomplished almost all the large groupings of quests to the point that you are traveling far and wide to complete single quests or hitting the dailies, day-in and day-out.

This is huge. I have played around even with my level 16 Warlock in Warsong Gulch and the experience you can obtain is equal to doing quests. If a quest would take you an hour to complete to get 6000 experience, then an hour in the battlegrounds will pay off in almost equal fashion. Plus, knowing that for every kill you are getting more and more experience, you try even harder. The battlegrounds have never offered so much to the WOW players as they are now.

That is not to say that I advocate someone just leveling their character in the battlegrounds. I do not. I do however support the use of battlegrounds as a means to supplement your questing. The challenges of the battlegrounds help players to get better at their character. You need to be able to perform much quicker and know your characters abilities at a much higher level to be good in the battleground PVP situation, at least when all things are equal.

You will die… Accept it.

Even if you aren’t that good at the PVP aspect, you can still go in and get some experience by just trying. There is a natural amount of dying built into the battlegrounds, so don’t get frustrated. The way they were designed, with a 10 level range of toons all fighting it out, means that unless you are at the top of that range, there are bigger, badder players out there just waiting to pwn you. Just go in and do your best and get some experience.

For many players an additional benefit to the battlegrounds is the honor points and the PVP gear. While PVP is not a major thought for players on non-PVP servers, the ability to accumulate PVP gear both for battlegrounds and Arena teams is big. PVP gear holds a significant advantage over regular gear when in a PVP fight. If you want to take PVP serious, then the need for you to accumulate some of the gear should be high on your list.

Having loads of earned honor points is also an advantage because there are other items that can be purchased with them other than strictly PVP gear. You can purchase rare and epic gems that can be socketed into your gear. And while you could wait until you are level 80 to start accumulating these points for such items, it is best to start early and just continue to use the battlegrounds as one more aspect of your game play.

More to look forward to as you level

One last reason for getting into the battlegrounds is the release of Isle of Conquest. This battleground is staged on a small island off the coast of Northrend where the Horde and Alliance battle it out. It is like Wintergrasp in game play with siege machines, workshops and now airships that battle it out to see which faction is the best, but it has many of the best Alterac Valley aspects.

I found this battleground to be even more fun than Wintergrasp, but I still hold Arathi Basin as my favorite. There are new vehicles such as the glaive thrower and new options such as being thrown over the walls of the enemy keep where you fight the opposing faction from the inside. It is a fun and entertaining new battleground that everyone should try. The unfortunate part is that you will not be able to get into the Isle of Conquest until you are level 71. So practice up now, so when you hit 71, you are ready to battle the opposing faction with aplomb.

I know there are still people out there that just hate the battlegrounds or hate the PVP aspect, but there are many new reasons why you should try to overcome your objections and get out there into a battleground. Just tell anyone that asks; the Inquisitor made you do it!

We Have a Verdict

August 15, 2009 :: Posted by - Stompalina :: Category - Class Discussion

Judge: Mister Ghostcrawler, have the developers reached a decision?
Ghostcrawler: We have your honor.

Judge: What say you?
Ghostcrawler: We, the developers, find the defendant, Touched by the Light, guilty of inappropriate behavior with healing paladins.

Judge: Touched by the Light, you are herby sentenced to a lifetime ban of interacting with stamina.*

Of course as a trade off, Touched by the Light will now grant spellpower by 20/40/60% of strength, and all I have to say is, “oh yay.”

Since strength is not a stat tanks stack, but collect as a secondary stat because it’s on almost all of their gear, if the current patch notes go live, I will be losing 128 spellpower. That’s a huge nerf to prots who didn’t do anything but gear as intended.

Even more peculiar is the change to Righteous Fury. The bonus threat generated through holy spells has been reduced from 90% to 80%. Somewhere in all the blame being applied to the PVP exploit of Touched by the Light, it appears Blizzard is concealing their unhappiness with the nasty little threat monkeys tankadins have become.

In exchange for the opportunity to delve into Onyxia’s lair and slay her, I will be giving up 10% of my holy threat and about 125 spellpower. Oh ya, this is going be one fun patch.

Does Onyxia Carry a Message?

August 14, 2009 :: Posted by - Stompalina :: Category - Raiding

You may have received a cute little polar bear last year, but this November we will all be getting a mini-Onyxia to add to our pet collections. All I can say is, “pets, smets.” They are cool and all, but I have never really had an obsession like some people, and I have never had Stomp’s weird pets in pairs complex. I once gave away a captured firefly to a real life friend and all I got was a free lunch at Freebirds, a place we both worked while in college.
The real excitement of the announcement is Onyxia herself will make a triumphant return only to be slaughtered again and again…and again by level 80s. Retuning old content is HUGE, not like Naxx huge because Blizzard tried to sell Naxx as the Kara of Lich King, which it is not!

Selling revamped content as new content for 40 bucks no less, is insulting and implies maybe someone is pulling strings at Blizzard. Could it be the same guy who told us it would take a half billion dollars to develop an MMO to compete with the World of Warcraft? Say $500 million out loud. Mark Cuban would have to sell the Dallas Mavericks and then, according to Forbes, throw in another $97million of his own cash to challenge WoW. Anyone else think the
number might be a little inflated?
Major Content vs. Minor Content
Don’t misinterpret the message. Retuning Onyxia’s lair for max levels is very different than Naxx. It will be released in a minor content patch. Major content patches herald in a new age of WoW. We attack the servers with logins like kids do their gifts on Christmas. Some of us find, as Haf has recently, not playing nice with the other classes means a stocking full of coal and nerfs. Others get new toys like a revamped ardent defender and a 10% stamina boost for a previously underappreciated blessing.

We pay for major content. Expansions have some “map” of where the story will take us and how Blizzard intends for it all to end. They have factored the major content patches into the cost of the expansion and your monthly subscription over the life of your account. I don’t want to imply, “my 15 bucks a month means I can demand any sort of content I want, hear me rawr,” but it is important to remember Blizzard is the one who has set this precedent. They have created a culture where our expansion investment plus our subscription fees equals the life of an expansion. As the big bear butt pointed out, sometimes we don’t get what we pay for, but overall Blizzard does a good job of supplying players with new content, even if I think it sucks.

Minor Content, however, isn’t game changing. It is often seen as quality of life changes. Take a look at any minor content patch, and you will find things like implemented holidays, the equipment manager, and even mounts at level 20. Minor content is the stuff Blizzard couldn’t get into the major content patch or bugs in the patch when it went live. Brewfest didn’t change the way we played the game, but it did make it more enjoyable.

Onyxia and the Future

Now that we know Blizzard intends to replace the old lair with a new and improved 10 and 25 man raid for level 80’s in a minor content patch, it leaves me wondering if this is a sign of things to come. Sure, it’s being done to celebrate 5 years of WoW, but the decision to retune old content for max levels could be a foreshadowing.

If the developers called me (oh yes, I’m that delusional) and granted me one wish, it would have to be retuning Zul’Farrak. It is the best 5 man in the game. Can you imagine the temple assault at level 80? As a bonus, you are going to give me updated stats on models of Ripsaw, Sul’Thraze the Lasher, and the Big Bad Mojo Mask? Well hmm, I think I just wet myself.

Once Blizzard gets a handle on retuning encounters like they did with Naxx and will do with Onyxia, the possibilities are endless. Hell, I just might forget I was charged $40 for a rehashed dungeon at the midnight release of Wrath of the Lich King.

The New WTF? N00b! The Column

August 13, 2009 :: Posted by - Stompalina :: Category - Other

Welcome to the first installment of WTF? N00b!
This column is intended for those of you who have been playing for a less than 6 months, 8 months or for that matter anyone who considers themselves to be a newbie to the game. Is this your first toon and you have not reached 80? Then you too can learn some things from this column.

As a member of the Rawr Crew, I will be coming to you twice a week with each entry focusing on a different part of being a noob. It is my intention to post my first entry every Tuesday and it will focus on players who are leveling a toon between levels 1 and 35. This will be the place where we can discuss some of the really basic concepts, strategies and information that makes your game play more fun and productive.

The second entry, to be posted on Saturdays, each week, will be intended for those players that have been playing for some time, but are still learning the intricacies of the game. I will delve deeper in to those levels from 35 to 70 where the game play slows down, quests get harder and instances become a regular part of your game. The fact is that the game changes as you level and hopefully, between the two weekly entries, I can enlighten the readers to some new information.

So, let’s delve right into the first entry for you 1 to 35’ers…

The biggest mistake I made during these early levels was not upgrading my equipment. I have spoken to many people in my guild and they all say the same thing; upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. It is easy to think you are doing just fine with the equipment you have, and you very well may be, but with bigger, better and more enchanted gear your leveling will be easier than ever.

There are three main ways to really upgrade your armor, weapons and gear. These ways are: purchasing new gear at the auction house, enchanting your items, and running instances and raids. You are already getting some upgrades as you quest, both as quest rewards and as green colored items dropped by the trash mobs you have to kill during your questing. The problem with relying solely on this method of upgrading is that there is better gear available to you if you use the auction house effectively.

Many newer players are freaked out by the auction house and I will admit that until you have really gotten in there, it can be very intimidating. The auction houses in the alliance cities are far more hectic and crowded than are the some of the horde cities such as Undercity. Just go in, click on the auctioneer and view the different categories of items that you can bid on. Select weapons for example, choose your type of weapon, then in the middle at the top of the screen place a check in the box for items you can use to narrow the results and hit search. Find weapons that are of the highest levels that you can use and hold your mouse over the picture. This will show you the weapons stats and you want to maximize the amount of damage or armor as well as stats that are important to your individual class.

For example if I am a level 21 warrior who uses two-handed swords. I would be looking for a two-handed sword in the range of levels 19-21 that does the most damage and preferably has a + to strength. Since strength is the number one stat I use as a warrior, but there are other stats that could be just as useful such as critical strike, weapon damage or hit rating. If I was looking for armor I might want dodge or parry on my gear.

Now after you buy your new two-handed sword, you have a better weapon than you were using, but you are not done. The second method of upgrading is to have your gear enchanted. The bonuses already on your equipment are good, but you can make it even better by having an enchantment placed on that item. There are two ways to get enchantments: having an enchanter do the enchantment for you or buying enchantment scrolls in the auction house.

If you are in a guild, it is easiest and usually the cheapest way to approach one of the enchanters in the guild to enchant your items. You may still have to purchase the materials for the enchantment at the auction house, but many times the leaders of the guild will do enchantments for you free of charge or for a nominal fee.

If you cannot find an enchanter or your item is one that cannot be enchanted, then you can look under the item enhancement category in the auction house and find some enchantments and other methods of making your gear better. Many times this is a more expensive method, but some of the item enhancements such as leg enhancements cannot be enchanted, they must be reinforced with additional protection such as a heavy armor kit.

The last way to get your upgrades is to run instances and raids. While you get dropped gear from the trash mobs you encounter during questing, the gear dropped in an instance is of a much higher quality. There are far better pieces of gear both from the instance trash mobs and from the bosses. But, the best sources for gear in the game are the loot drops from the bosses in the instances/raids.

This is another area where you guild comes in handy (we will be discussing guilds in a future blog post). The guild is there to assist you in leveling and getting some of the leaders or members of you guild to run you through the appropriate level instances in order to get gear is critical. Whether it is Scarlet Monastery or the Dead Mines, you need to be running instances in order to get the best gear possible for your level.

As you progress through the game, you will find that the best gear is dropped by the bosses in instances and raids. This is not always the case at the lower levels, but in the higher levels you need to get your gear from boss drops or you will be left far behind in the battle for gear.

I hope that answers some of you questions and assists you in the game. Good Luck.
