MOngoJerry Agent Dawn - US/rant

I don’t know why this bugs me so much, but I can’t stand that my hunter is displayed without his gun or his pet. (I can understand why the pet is not displayed, I am mounted somewhere over Storm Peaks, so my pet isn’t out. That still doesn’t excuse it, but I understand.) What I don’t understand is why hunters don’t get ranged weapon displayed on the log-in screen. NOBODY CARES ABOUT MY STAT AX AND  STAT DAGGER!

Also, I remember when I could be on a ground mount and my pet wouldn’t disappear. I want that back too. (There is a way to get around this, mount up and queue for a random heroic. When it pops, make sure you are mounted, when you return to your mount after the instance is over, you will have your pet out and be on your mount, just like old times!)

There is also no reason that Volley should literally break my gun. I mean, you guys are the ones that made the arrows come out of my gun. That’s your fault not mine, I shouldn’t have to pay the repair bills after just a couple of heroics.

I know that there are a ton of posts out there talking about the lost opportunities that the log-in screen presents, but this really pisses me off.

Please fix this in Cata Blizz. KTHXBAI

Nobody else see’s your logon screen, so what items that are displayed there only effects the individual. If there are indeed a ton of posts about the login screen then I completely understand why Blizard don’t take such things seriously.

What would I rather have, a well balanced and interesting ability for my class or a prettier login screen?

In response to Grey’s post, why do we have to make a choice between a well balanced and interesting ability for our classes and a prettier login screen? This is the typical false choice that gets applied to games development.

In a multi-billion dollar gaming franchise, there is rarely the decision of if this, then not that. I understand that no one else see’s Ozi’s login screen but does that mean that only things that other people see in game have development value? Ozi pays his subscription just like everyone else in game and small, quality of digital life issues matter (although it sounds like Blizzard has introduced a gold sink with volley to offset the survivability of hunters in 5 mans and raids).

It’s small efforts like allowing hunter pets to follow them when they are mounted that show that Blizzard is minding the day to day concerns of its player base. This is the type of small engineering fix that sneaks its way onto the patch notes and gets overlooked by everyone except the players that it matters to. Read through some past patch notes in detail and you’ll be astonished to see what gets into the game.

This is just one of the little issues that makes or breaks a game. It has been said by Bungie that the last 25% of game development time should be spent on polishing. That polishing is what seperates games like Modern Warfare 2 and Gears of War 2 from other games. It is that little bit of polish that we should see in upcoming Blizzard games if they want to stay atop the MMO genre.
A great example of this is NHL 10 vs NHL 09. There is very little difference fundamentally between the games. However, NHL 10 has over 200 gameplay improvements in it, none of them by themselves is worth noting, but the overall improvement is substantal.
WoW has undergone a great many improvements over the years. I remember being in awe over the new login screen for BC. After looking at the vanilla screen for 2 years, it looked awesome, and lead to the new Wrath screen that looks awesome too. Remember, only corpses you could loot used to glitter, now quest objectives and more do too. It’s little things like this that give the game a polished feel, and are just as important as the mechanics of the game itself.
WoW is a constantly evolving game, there is nothing wrong with wanting more.

    Oh my darling Mum…

“What I don’t understand is why hunters don’t get ranged weapon displayed on the log-in screen. NOBODY CARES ABOUT MY STAT AX AND STAT DAGGER!”
I really have to wonder why it matters which item is seen, but you see your ranged weapon 90% of the time you’re in game, and especially at higher gear levels some of those weapons are pretty friggin sweet.

“Also, I remember when I could be on a ground mount and my pet wouldn’t disappear. I want that back too.”
This was removed in BC when flying mounts were introduced. I know you weren’t playing your hunter much then, but flying to a different spot only to land and get swarmed by all the new friends your kitty made sucked. In order to save the countless hunters the hassle of having to constantly dismiss and re-summon pets, they just made it where they went poof when you mounted.

If there are infinite resources your point would be valid, however there is always the need to prioritise. The ‘issue’ is with the character selection screen for one character class and has no effecton gameplay therefore it is likely to have a much lower priority. There are bugs in-game that would demand a higher priority (the double death animation for example).

Then of course there is the business model to consider, and let’s be realistic here Activision want to maximise profits from the remaining years that WoW will be a major player.

TLDR A character selection screen should have a lower priority than game play
