What Vanilla Instances Do You Want to See in Cataclysm?

March 09, 2010 :: Posted by - Plectical :: Category - Cataclysm, Other

News has started to leak out of Blizzard that Shadow Fang Keep and Dead Mines won’t be the only instances that Blizzard makes into Heroic instances.  As always, its refreshing and troubling to see Blizzard revisiting old content and adding a coat of polish.  It’s refreshing because there is so much content that just sits underutilized in WOW.  Its troubling because as nostalgic and fun as old content can be, it’s slightly worrying that Blizzard is sprucing up old content instead of making new content.  Anyway, I’m getting side tracked.
The real point of this post is to ask our writers and readers which old instances they’d like to see in Cataclysm.  Here are the rules: You can only choose 1 instance that you’d like to see and you have to provide an explanation as to why you think that instance provides something novel and compelling.

What: The Stockades.

Why: This relatively short instance would act as a nice companion piece to Dead Mines and fits well within Blizzard’s current dungeon design (fast and easy).  Most importantly, I feel like Blizzard could pursue some interesting quest lines involving the Defias Brotherhood since all of the action in game is moving back to Azeroth.  Additionally, there is something inherently cool about having an instance tucked into a major city.

    What: BRD

Why: Show the new players what a 6 hrs+ PUG can mean. Seriously, there are so many ways to run this place, it is so huge, that is amazing.

  • Felicia S.

    What: Scarlet Monastery

Why: I just love that place! It is one of those that can still be fun even though you have done it a million times before.

The only one I would kill to see is ZF.

The place is epic with the design and size

The encounters are epic with the stair encounter, the crazy shaman troll with totems and summoned alligators, the angry rescuees, and a big damn lizard emerging from the water.

The loot is epic combinable swords, voodoo masks, and proccing daggers.

Without a doubt, the absolute best 5 man in the history of WoW.

Hey now, your using my picture without credit there.

    I’d like to see BRD.

I’ve enough of small sub 20 minutes instances, I want to go back to the days when instance grinding was an investment, however I also believe the current badge system would need a revamp so that I wouldn’t have to run a huge instance 100 times.

I believe in running bigger / longer instances for increased rewards. Sure you could still have your small stuff fast to run, less rewarding dungeons, but I’d like to have the option of running a 3 hour instance that’s not a raid, like BRD for instance as mentioned above.

See it like this, quality over quantity, at the moment, with an average pug, you can get 3 – 4 instances done in an hour, with an average of 4 badges per instance, rounding upwards, you can get 20 badges in an hour. Why not just make a 3 hour instance that rewards 60 – 50 badges ? At least I won’t get bored of the damn thing so fast.

Dread, I remember the first time I used vent was in a BRD run…that ran 6 hours. BRD may not be my favorite but it was surely a moment of realization about how big this game actually was.

Felicia, I love SM as well!! Cathedral takes the cake simply because of the hidden boss in the back of the chapel (although I do love the last fight in the Armory).

Rhab, excellent point! I forgot how innovative that instance was. Makes you wonder if there is something lost in the current Blizzard 5 man dungeon design…

I’d like a straight response that the original dungeons aren’t being removed, just a new Heroic version added. One would think this was a given, but then look at Onyxia.. It’s one thing to revamp an instance to better fit the new leveling path, and add a ‘nostalgia’ run for 80′s.. it’s another to upgrade content beyond the scope of the original audience.
However, I have to agree with bringing back Epicly long dungeons. Our first run in BRD, we set aside an entire day.. Took us 9 hours, with 6 wipes. One of our guild’s fondest runs. Be interesting to see what’s up with Princess Moira and the child emperor. (dwarf womens in Leia bikinis.. mmmmm)

I say why not Zul Gurub and bring back the original Corrupted blood!

I think it would be really interesting to incorporate more real world events like the Blood Plague into the game once again. Imagine if Blizzard introduced outbreaks in specific zones that opened up daily quest lines for players. “Sholozar Basin is in the midst of an outbreak of Oracle Flu! Exercise extreme caution if you plan on traveling in the area!”

A mistake on my part. The photo pictured in the article above was created over at The Ancient Gaming Noob by Wilhelm2451. You can check out more of his work at: http://tagn.wordpress.com/2009/05/26/the-secret-of-nyhm/.
