Mental WoW: Know Your Limits

April 21, 2010 :: Posted by - Greatjohn :: Category - Other

I was hit with a double depression when the guild was moving from gearing us up in Naxx and starting into Ulduar. I’m not sure if anyone in the guild noticed since I can fake it pretty well but it changed the way I was viewing WoW. It was a case of when the therapy became a cause of the malady.

Part of the problem was having too high of expectations for myself in the raid. Every time Greatjohn died, it was my fault and I had to do better. When I was healing and someone died, it was my fault and I was wasting people’s time. If I wasn’t in the top five on the damage meters it meant that I was a horrible player, that the people above me were probably asking themselves why I was there, that if I was better we would be able to get further into progression. Before the double depression, I was eager and excited on every raid night, but I started to dread raid nights because it was going to be just another series of failures. Read more…

WoW is What You Make It; The Great Mount Debate

April 16, 2010 :: Posted by - Rhabella :: Category - Community, Other

This post is in no way meant to attack any individuals, and though one of the situations is very specific to Rawrcast, and its audience, my opinions on the situation do not reflect the views of either Stompalina or Hafrot.  The truth of the matter is they may not accurately reflect my opinion on the situation since I am presenting two extreme occurrences for the sheer purpose of creating a dialogue within our communities, both the exclusive Rawrcast community and the greater WoW community.

As many of you know, the Celestial Steed has hit the Blizzard store, and there has been a ton of discussion on Twitter, the blogosphere, and even the forums.  Many of the players involved have started their end of days counters. They ingested so much cheap tequila while watching 2012 that they believe not only was the movie great, but it was true.  As an aside, if I could offer one piece of non-WoW advice, it would be to never, under any circumstances, purchase tequila that is packaged in a plastic bottle and is in the $5-$10 range for a handle.  It’s just an emergency room visit waiting to happen. Engulfed by the Shadow; The Warlock Preview Analysis

April 15, 2010 :: Posted by - Rhabella :: Category - Cataclysm, Class Discussion

I understand the need to put demons into spec niches.  I respect it, and to be completely candid, I actually love it.  I like the idea that when I walk around with my cute little felpuppy everyone knows I am affliction without having to inspect me.  I wear my affliction spec like a badge of honor, and my felpuppy is my most recognizable badge.  I love the demonology locks who stroll around with their felguard, and the destro boys who have their little imps are just as proud of their mastery of fire as I am of shadow magic.

The problem has become the 2 factions of locks in WoW.  There are some, who like me, don’t really see a need for more demons because some of them are wasted as it is, and then there are some who feel like we deserve more demons to play with because we are locks and, you know, that’s what we do.  Sadly, I can’t really argue much with the other camp when Blizzard is pulling the shit they are pulling with one of our new learnable abilities. Mental Wow: You Are Who You Know

April 14, 2010 :: Posted by - Greatjohn :: Category - Other

Lonely puppy in the streetThe first guild that truly felt like a home was named Boomslang. The center of this guild was a married couple, their children, his mother and their friends. After running a few instances with them, they asked if I wanted to join, which I eagerly did. It didn’t matter that we were “raiding” LBRS and not Molten Core, because we were doing it together and having a really good time. Playing with that guild was a lot like soaking in a comfortably warm bath, after spending time with them I was relaxed and decompressed.

But then like a lot of guilds whose goal was to “have a good time together”, things started to fall apart. Some people wanted to raid, other people wanted to level alts together and other people just wanted to chat in Ironforge while jumping in circles. The situation really felt like I was losing a family and I didn’t really want to deal with it. Eventually Boomslang broke up: some people went to raiding guilds and were happy, some continued to jump in circles while chatting and I think some even made a new leveling guild. Me? I sharded all my epics, deleted my druid and rerolled on a completely different server.

Yeah. I have abandonment issues.  Read more…

An Interview With Nate Arizona

April 13, 2010 :: Posted by - Plectical :: Category - Community, Guilds

This will serve as the first in a series of interviews with Officers and Guild Masters from different servers. My intention for these articles is to cast a wide net to cover all of the different approaches to guild management and to shine a light on some of the ordinary guilds that may not be catching the spot light with World or Sever Firsts.

Today’s interview is with my old GM and good friend, NateArizona. Nate is the former GM for the Alliance Proudmoore guild, Pansy Division and also the co-host of the critically acclaimed podcast Proudmoore Pansies!

Plec: Time to go for the jugular Geraldo style! Just joking…but not really. You were recently the GM of Pansy Division and you decided to hand over the reigns of leadership after several months in charge. Most officers see guild management as a part of the meta-game offered by WoW, something that is as integral to their experience in game as raiding or PVP. Did you perceive Guild Management in a similar fashion? Why did you eventually hand over leadership? Read more…
