Under the Hood: Gaming Systems Galore

June 12, 2010 :: Posted by - Cornelious0_0 :: Category - Under the Hood

Helllo Rawrcast readers, Cornelious here bringing you another installment of Under the Hood. After receiving some questions via Twitter lately I found it only fitting to cover this week’s topic. WoW players come from all walks of life and all levels of knowledge when it comes to computer hardware. What I’d like to do is give a number of different system configuration examples in different price ranges that I see to be the best bang for your buck…keeping WoW as the primary focus. The system prices will range from $500 to $2,500 in $500 increments (give or take) to ensure that most all bases are covered. All prices will be coming from Newegg.com and will be accurate as of the week of posting, I leave it up to you guys to keep up to date with changes and make decisions accordingly.

Some people may have had good or bad experiences with certain brands of components but I’m going to attempt to be as unbiased as possible and give you guys the raw information to use as a baseline when building a new gaming computer. To avoid drowning the information in explanations I’m going to keep the explanations of each system to a minimum and leave it up to you guys ‘n gals to leave a comment on the post or get a hold of me to get into specifics.

Coca-Cola and World of Warcraft

June 11, 2010 :: Posted by - Ozimandias :: Category - Blizzard, Other

Coke with Bacon!

My marketing teacher, Dr. Woods liked to say that Coca-cola is the only company on the face of the Earth that doesn’t have to advertise. Coke is simply everywhere and chances are not only is there some kind of Coke product in your house, but there are also Coke products in small villages in a jungle somewhere. Why is Coke so big?

Coke is so big because they know their target audience. They know that there are people out there from ages 3-109 that like the taste of Coke. They know this. They also know that there are people out there that like Coke but don’t like the 140 calories and 39 grams of sugar that a 12 oz can has, so they produced Diet Coke.  Diet Coke is great, but what if you are sensitive to caffeine? Caffeine –free Diet Coke is your solution. Oh don’t like the taste of Diet Coke, but still want to avoid the sugar and calories? Coke Zero is here just for you. Oh and don’t forget that most of these Coke products are available in Cherry or Vanilla flavors. So don’t fret you Vanilla Coke Zero people, Coke has you covered.

All of that is just Coke itself, we didn’t even get in to Orange and Root Beer. Coke is trying to be everybody to everything and it works.

It won’t work for World of Warcraft. Read more…

Storytelling in Icecrown Citadel Sucks

June 09, 2010 :: Posted by - Heartbourne :: Category - Lore, PVE

Whenever you have a universe as big as Warcraft, retcons and inconsistency are inevitable. There are so many things going on written by so many people in many places. To me, Icecrown as a zone and as a raid instance was the epitome of this unfinished, chaotic mess of storytelling.

Lets start out with my initial expectations of what I thought I was going to see when I first arrived in Icecrown. Back when Arthas was racing Illidan to the Frozen Throne (so that Arthas could “save” Ner’zhul and Illidan could kill him) during the last events of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, as well as the Arthas novel and other sources of lore, Illidan and his allies had arrived in Icecrown well before Arthas and were sieging the Citadel. They had built up considerable defenses, and Arthas arrived by exploring the underground tunnels of Azjol-Nerub.

The Quest and You

June 08, 2010 :: Posted by - Eulixe :: Category - Cataclysm, PVE

QuestQuests are an integral part of MMO’s. Without quests most MMO’s or RPG’s for that matter, would be nothing more than a grind-fest. WoW is no exception. Containing thousands of quests, you would be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t completed at least a few hundred.

Quests are what drive players though the content. They direct you to the next level appropriate zone, they reward you with gear upgrades and there one of the best ways to get a game’s story over to the audience. So why is it, with quests being such an important factor in MMO’s, they seem to be overlooked so much of the time?

Episode 74: Fall of the Lich King

June 07, 2010 :: Posted by - Stompalina :: Category - Podcast

We did it! Together, the members of Bound defeated Tubby (aka. Arthas). Many thanks goes to all of the members who started off as listeners, and friends who we have played with over the years. Don’t go anywhere just yet, guys. Heroic Tubby is calling!

This week’s episode of Rawrcast features one of our long-time contributors to rawrcast.com, and new member to Bound, Plectical! We couldn’t have been happier to catch up on his back story, and a few of his most recent posts. He also gives his take on a few of this week’s more noteworthy blue posts, and a few changes coming in Cataclysm.

We also had a few listener e-mails and FFA questions that lead to a completely pointless rant… all of which is worth a listen! This week’s episode is available via iTunesRSS feed, direct download, or you can stream it from our website!

Proudmoore Pride 2010: June 19th

June 07, 2010 :: Posted by - Heartbourne :: Category - Community, Other, World Events

June is LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-gender) month in the US and elsewhere, and Blizzard recognized it with the gayest wallpaper that they have ever released. More importantly, it means that there are going to be lots of gay pride events around the world, including in the World of Warcraft!

Proudmoore Pride has been held every year since WoW’s launch and has been primarily run by The Spreading Taint family of guilds. This year, it will be on June 19th at noon PST. Many, many LGBT-friendly guilds and players take part in Proudmoore Pride from both factions. While I don’t know an exact number, it was easily over 500 last year, perhaps upwards of a thousand, and it has grown extremely quickly year to year, likely faster than the growth of the WoW player base. The Spreading Taint family of guilds alone reports 4,658 unique members have at some point been recorded in one of the guilds over some 12,000 characters. Even if you are not interested in the parade itself, it’s still quite an event to witness this many players in one place.

Players not currently in a guild on the US Proudmoore realm, or who would like to network with the The Spreading Taint on Horde or Stonewall Family on Alliance, can join a temporary guild connected to the other guilds’ chat. Both The Spreading Taint and Stonewall Family are already comprised of several guilds, so visitors fit right it. There are lots of guilds that participate, both Proudmoore and guest guilds from other servers, so if you are looking for an LGBT friendly guild, the parade is a great place to get to know people. The Alliance players start in Theramore and march toward Camp Taurajo, where they meet up with Horde players to march toward Ratchet to take the boat to Booty Bay for a party. If you’ve ever wanted to see a time when Dalaran is empty and you may disconnect from lag in Booty Bay, this may be your only opportunity.
