Head in the Sand

August 07, 2010 :: Posted by - Plectical :: Category - Other

I’m not sure how many of you are following the news coming out of the Cataclysm Beta but I’ve adopted a strict head in the sand policy. Whether it’s the sheer amount of news and updates or the mercurial nature of the information (the game is in Beta and things are changing rapidly), I’ve found myself reading less and less about the Beta.

Now that’s not to say I’m uninterested in Cataclysm, far from it. Lurking at the periphery of my thoughts on the expansion is the general idea of rolling up either a Hunter or a Priest (maybe both) and I’m also excited to explore the new talent trees of the classes that I’m already playing. What I’ve read of the changes to leveling has me excited not only for the potential fun of leveling (crazy to even write that!) but also for the potential skill increase to the overall player base (the idea being players who are introduced to the strengths and weaknesses of their class in a more logical way will lead to players who know how to play their class better).

What I’m not interested in is tracing the genesis of all of these changes. With the frequent Blue Posts and articles that have been proliferating on forums and fan sites, I feel like players are now more than ever getting pulled into the rigors of the development process. While this can be interesting, I feel like I’m reading crib notes for the expansion. I want to experience as much content as possible for the first time when the expansion comes out. Maybe it’s just the fact that I grew up playing games before the spread of the Internet, where the majority of my exposure to the game before a purchase came from the opinion of the store clerk or a brief article in a games publication. I still treasure the memories of stepping through the Dark Portal in Hellfire Peninsula and unwrapping Mega Man 2 on Christmas morning with only vague ideas about what the game was all about. Anyone else trying to keep the expansion a surprise?

Pagecraft: Arthas: Rise of the Lich King by by C. Golden

August 06, 2010 :: Posted by - thehistorychic :: Category - Pagecraft

Welcome to Pagecraft!

My name is Felicia aka Fleabee and I review books in my spare time.  I have three main hobbies in my life: Reading Books, Playing World of Warcraft, and Crocheting.  I haven’t quite figured out to factor crocheting into the mix but the folks at Rawrcast figured out a way for me combine reading and warcraft: review for them.  Since I already do this for all the other books I read,  I jumped on the opportunity and went searching for the first book.  Talk about a quest! Since I have never read a book based on a game, I tried to pick one that I had heard about from other people.  Come to find out there are two main authors that kept popping up: Christie Golden and Richard A. Knaack. So I decided that my first two books would be from them. Though I am always on the lookout for book suggestions so please leave a comment if there is one you think I should read.  Also because I believe in getting everyone involved, there is a poll to decide what I should read for my 3rd book.  Vote and you could win a copy too (if the random.org gods are smiling upon you). How To Lose Friends and Alienate Raiders

August 03, 2010 :: Posted by - Plectical :: Category - Raiding

This is a quick guide on how to be a loathsome raid member and alienate yourself from your fellow raiders. Hopefully these few quick tips can help you infuriate every player around you!

  1. Contribute as little as possible to the raid: Whether you’re the tank/healer/or just regular Old Joe DPS, you are way too important to follow kill orders or any instructions that are coming from your raid leader. In fact, I encourage you to mute vent and listen to Metal as loud as possible. Remember, boss fights are no exception. Strive for mediocrity. After all with the 30% buff, you don’t need to do a damn thing. Remember, if you die, the raid should easily be able to 24 man it.
  2. Roll on every piece of loot that drops. Don’t feel bashful about being worthless to the raid, you are entitled to roll and get every piece of loot that drops in the raid. Loudly announce your intentions for the loot that dropped over vent and moan/groan/scream loudly when you are out rolled. However, just cause you didn’t roll high enough to get the loot doesn’t mean that you lost. Petition the player that got the loot via whisper, informing them that the piece is a much better fit for you and complain loudly about the current loot structure over as many raid channels as possible. If you still don’t get the loot, continue to follow rule #1.
  3. Conduct yourself as if you are an officer. Rank is for suckers. You know exactly what everyone should be doing at all times and you should let them know it. Give advice to players of your same class who have been consistently outperforming you for months (you should have ample time as you’re lying on your back during a boss fight). Don’t fret about gumming up Vent with advice and calling out specific players who you think are under performing, the raid as a whole will definitely benefit from your soap boxing .

Follow all of the steps above and you should be the single most hated person in your raid.

Under the Hood: A Life of Benchmarking

August 01, 2010 :: Posted by - Cornelious0_0 :: Category - Under the Hood

Helllo Rawrcast readers, Cornelious here to bring you another installment of Under the Hood.

I figured it has been MORE than long enough since my last post and I might as well sit down and let everyone know where I’ve been and what’s going to be eating up the vast majority of my time over the coming weeks. As some of you may know I have been developing a relationship with DogHouse Systems for months now and it finally came time about two weeks ago that a 70lb box of toys arrived at my door. Over the coming weeks I’m going to be spending the vast majority of my time doing extremely thorough hardware testing using the new 875K Core i7 processor from Intel at varying clock speeds. The 875K will be matched up with a pair of HD5770 video cards as well as a beastly HD5970. All the numbers that are soon to come are going to be a great deal more than many people are going to take interest in so I don’t plan to bury you all in tech jargon, don’t worry. ;)

Through different hardware configurations and increasing clock speeds I’ve got dozens and dozens of tests ahead of me (as well as a great deal of time spent sitting around doing about as much as Mr. Einstein up above) so it is very possible that I might be a little while between posts over the coming weeks. If you do find yourself curious about what’s going on the best thing to do would be to follow me on Twitter. I’m slowly working toward launching  my personal website dedicated to Under the Hood so until I get there the majority of my updates will be taking place via Twitter as to not split my time up in to many directions.

I owe a great deal to the Rawrcast community and our amazing hosts and I wanted to make sure that everyone knows that even during my absence I’m moving forward in a direction that couldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for that first E-mail to the HUGE SACK over 9 months ago.
