The PvE perspective: When is it Time to Re-roll?
November 06, 2010 :: Posted by - Sippycup :: Category - Cataclysm, Class Discussion

For those of you not familiar with the term “re-roll” it refers to a point that you change focus from your main character, to an alt. There is a veritable smorgasbord or reasons as to why one would re-roll, which I intend to cover in part 2 of this article but for now we will focus on the when. With that explanation out of the way, in weeks leading up to patch 4.0.1 I have asked myself this very question, no less then several dozen time. Furthering my opinion that the topic needed a harder look on this weeks podcast several people called/wrote into the show, asking about this very topic. So with out further a due enjoy The PvE perspective: When is it time to re-roll? Part 1.
The when is probably the easiest answer of this topic. In short, when Cataclysm drops. Do you want further explanation? Okay, fine, have it your way … You see, when Cataclysm is released to the masses at 12:01 A.M. P.S.T. on December 7th it’s just like hitting the reset button on your old NES (but this time, it doesn’t involve blowing into a cartridge. Perhaps I should of prefixed this statement with “GEEK IS”) Here is the main reasoning why I believe Cataclysm’s release is the best/only time to re-roll. The main point I intend on delving into is about your guild. Your guild hasn’t made any investment into your character for all intensive purposes at the release of a an expansion. Gear is being replaced with quest greens off the get go, or shortly after if you have been doing heroic ICC for a while. Guild members have a tendency to raise an eyebrow (or two, or three, okay maybe not three, I‘ve seen a uni-brow but yet to see anyone with a third eyebrow) with your decision to re-roll mid expansion, and with good reason. Here, the guild has invested months of raiding, and shipping loot to you, only to have said gear, effectively sharded. As you are not focusing on your main character any more, all the past endeavors have gone to the way side, seemingly self serving. The guild is put into the position where they have to gear up another character, which depending on what loot system your guild uses, you could effectively be taking loot from a person that has been on one character waiting for a specific drop only to have you (who has geared up two characters now) “ninja” it from him/her. Adding more drama to your guild, and we all know we all need more drama in our guilds. Pardon my blatant sarcasm, or the need to explain my previous statement , but sarcasm is often misconstrued in text. The above doesn’t even take into account you having to relearn your new character, just to make the switch from a melee DPS, to a range DPS, can change your game play dramatically, not to mention, if you make a more dramatic swap, IE switching from a melee DPS, to a tank, or a healer. I could easily articulate at least another ten reasons why the release of Cataclysm is the right time to re-roll, hell, I could even play devils advocate to the above statements, but, I will save you, the readers, from a unnecessarily lengthy article. Now we know the when. Now we need to know the why.
The reason(s) to re-roll are staggering, some common pit falls, some legitimate reasons, all of which are more controversial, and open to interpretation. At this time I would like you to keep in mind, I will discuss this topic at great lengths in my next article , the conclusions that are drawn, are the opinion of this writer, and may not be shared by persons with laces in their shoes. So Rawr friends, make sure to tune into part two of this series later this week. Same Rawr time, same Rawr channel. Additionally, I really like to see Facebook likes on the articles, but some comments would sure go a long way in guiding my hand down the road, so should you have the time to leave a comment, good, or bad, I would greatly appreciate it.
