I think Nefarian is a primary example of what Blizz is doing by putting the ball in the DPS court on succeeding. While tanks do have interrupts, there is quite a bit put on dps that if you don't interrupt the pillar adds, it is a wipe (till geared, then you can get away with one miss.). Then also switching dps properly from nef to ony, then from pillar adds to Nefarion to get that extra electrocute done.

I think the pressure the tanks and healers have is what draws us to those classes, while if you don't want that pressure 100% of the time, go dps. In saying that though, there is a personal pressure in/out of game for quality DPS and it's you have to always work on getting your DPS higher. If you asked me to top the DPS meters, I couldn't do it but I also control how long the DPS is alive, so I do have some control in it... :)

Another insightful article. I kind of disagree with the statement, "If a
DPS makes a mistake, the majority of encounters will continue on
with very little interruption. There is rarely a time when a DPS is
directly responsible for the lives of others in game."

I'd argue that damage dealers do perform a critical function that
effects the lives of others in limiting the duration of encounters. I'm
just making the same old argument that it is a triangle of
responsibility; DPS keeps the healers (mana bar) alive by limiting fight
durations, healers keep tanks (and do some extent) DPS alive so they
can keep tanking, and tanks get punched in the face so DPS doesn't.

In short, bringing 17 Tovo's or Profess0r's to heroic Halfus makes the
fight quite easy, bringing 17 Andys would make it functionally
impossible :)
