Guest Post by Korban Yes that was my first thought too when I heard about GW2. Well let me tell you a little story about when MMORPGs were just starting. Assuming you aren’t some MW3 playing 14 year-old screeching loud poorly constructed strings of racist curses into your headset, you may remember that in the early days the first real good MMOs were Everquest 2, World of Warcraft, and Guild Wars. All three were successful in their own right but of course WoW blew the success of the other two out of the water. EQ2 and WoW were both subscription based but GW1 was a buy-to-play. You got the disc and it was yours to play online as much as you wanted. “How did they make money?,” you ask in a condescending voice? Well firstly, shut the hell up you prick. Secondly their servers used much fewer resources and were cheaper to run. ArenaNet (the developers) also released content expansions that you could buy, or not buy, much more rapidly than wow ever did. In about 2 years they had 3 content expansions. So to recap: one-time buy, no subscription, and optional expansions. Sounds great right? Well guess what, it continues with GW2. Ever forget to play WoW for a month and feel like a moron for giving Blizz 15 bucks to have the option to log in? No? . . . uhm me neither. At any rate, no subscription is the biggest selling point for me. However, if you are a cynical, pessimistic bastard like me then you may be thinking that this is a free-to-play and it will suck and spam you to buy shit in their store. Well it’s not, so stop being a dick and continue to find out why! |
