Guest Post: Priests in 4.2

July 05, 2011 :: Posted by - Stompalina Jenkins :: Category - Healing

As mentioned on Episode 118, we’re proud to feature the following guest post by Derevka. Make sure to leave a comment, questions or opinion on the matter, as we will address this and other healing topics during the upcoming Healing Round Table! – Stomp

With 4.2 being out for a week now, it seems only fitting to recap what the impact has been to Priests. You might laugh at that concept, since at first glance there was… well…. no changes really made to the priest class. However there is a significant change made to how critical heals operate, and that affects priests substantially. Lets take a high level view of what has happened for Priests in 4.2…

The advent of critical heals now hitting for 200% of the heal, whereas in the past it hit for only 150%, is a huge boon for priests. Yes, of course, many healers have talents that provide some form of bonus or benefit when they critically heal (e.g. Ancestral Awakening, Living Seed). However, this affects Discipline Priests (arguably the most) just by pure nature as to how absorbs work.

Not only are your crits bigger, the Divine Aegis shields they provide are bigger… 33% bigger.

Disc Priests can now spec and gear really one of two ways in 4.2. The first is to gear for Raid Healing and Shielding (much like how they have been doing in Tier 11– pre shielding big AOE damage, and utilizing Prayer of Healing/Divine Aegis to heal up and mitigate consistent “aura like” damage). The second is Tank Healing. With a priest being able to consistently create Divine Aegis shields, cast Power Word: Shields, and bomb Greater Heals and Penances on your tank, Discipline can provide amazing single target throughput and utility to your raid.
