Crisis on Multiple Servers

November 02, 2009 :: Posted by - Plectical :: Category - Cataclysm, Other, User Interface

One of the big changes coming with Patch 3.3 is the introduction of randomized dungeons. In order to facilitate this, Blizzard has enabled cross-server LFG (read: players from multiple servers can run instances together). Ultimately, players from all different servers will be running heroics and raids together with a complete group of unknowns.

Hold on, I’m not done. Blizzard has also removed the regular and heroic dungeon dailies and replaced them with randomized counterparts (running a heroic or a regular dungeon with a group of random players from multiple servers). In addition, all heroics now grant two Emblems of Triumph and all random heroic dailies grant two Emblems of Frost (the new Patch 3.3 Emblems). Also, there will be no more lockouts for players who run randomized heroics (so you can run HVH all day long with as long as the group is random). Got all that?

March 29, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Podcast, Raiding, User Interface

This week Haf shares his Three Pronged Attack to getting his hands on a Proto-Drake. He pretty much has his bases covered, and his hands full working on obtaining a version of this awesome flying mount. In working towards the Glory of the Hero achievement, he nailed a fantastic strategy for the Krik’thir the Gatewatcher encounter, and shares it with us! Sadly, he made it through an entire episode and failed to mention the infamous Albino (Al-bee-no) drake.

And, we had an exclusive interview this week with Tim from El’s Extreme Anglin’ that was aired in this week’s show! We chatted about the upcoming changes being planned for fishing in 3.1, detail a few older changes, and get all giggly over the new bobbers being added!

This week we had the distinct pleasure of being guests on a show that we have followed as listeners for quite awhile, The Combobulator. Emeny was kind enough to have us on for a lovely chat, meandering through topics like; how we came into blogging and podcasting, our roles as raiders in our guild, and we reviewed an article that details the mandatory attributes of a successful raider.

So, if you aren’t already subscribed to The Combobulator, give this special episode a listen. You are bound to learn a little bit more about Haf and me, and you may gain a different perspective on the Virtues of an Effective Raider in World of Warcraft.

    3.1 Preview Video – Part I

    February 26, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - User Interface

    ***SUPER-DUPER SPOILER ALERT***
Along with all of the announced 3.1 changes this week, the much unexpected Argent Tournament was added to the PTR yesterday! Personally, I knew nothing about this new area, but I was raring to go check out and do some exploring.

Additionally, in this little video I demonstrate the Dual Spec and Gear Manager interface. It isn’t very fancy, but both are very overdue!

3.1 Preview – Part 1 from Stompalina aka. Denise on Vimeo.

For full information regarding The Argent Tournament, the gear available, the new pets (yeah!), or anything else shown in the video, visit MMO-Champion.com!

Part II will consist of me trying to figure out how the Tournament works… And, possibly some badly played PVP duals.

    Happy PTR-ing!

    PTR: Public Test Reality

February 25, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Community, PVE, Podcast, Raiding, User Interface

Ahh… The PTR is live and there is so much excitement in the air about the impending 3.1 patch that you can cut it with a Betrayer of Humanity!

In the midst of all of the hubbub our guild has asked that we put most of our live raiding on hold to take a closer look at the PTR. Nearly our entire raiding population, along with many from outside of our guild, have copied our characters over and plan to tackle the 3.1 content head-on.

While this is extremely exciting, it is also bound to cause many headaches in the coming weeks. Here are a few of the pros and cons of being an active raiding guild on the PTR:

    PROS

    • Getting to see new content will spice things up from the curing farm of same ‘ol, same ‘ol bullshit.
    • The pressure of new content usually weeds out the weaklings.
    • Teamwork is crucial and typically builds comradely between raiders.
    • PTR testing is crucial to the game we all know and love. See what happened in 3.08 when there were so few people testing? Bug-o-licious!
    • You get a TON of exposure to some very involved players who could one day be potential recruits for your guild. Forging new relationships with players cross-server opens doors far beyond your guild.
    • Being able to test out new specs, talents, spells, glyphs, etc. will aid your LIVE experience. You can also share your learnings with players with similar specs throughout your guild.

    CONS

    • Being the first to see the new content means that there are few to none encounter guides. Gotta figure it out for ourselves!
    • Raiders might ends up burned out on beating theirs heads against the wall of progression by the time the patch actually goes live.
    • Typically, none of the add-ons we so heavily rely on are functional… at first.
    • The excitement of loot is short-lived when you realize that it will only be yours until the testing is complete.

In the end, our current LIVE content is on farm and is typically cleared in under two nights. So, what else is there to do besides tough it out with the rest of the guild on the PTR? For us, the PROS far outweigh the CONS this time around. A year ago we weren’t in this stalemate of content. But, for now I would rather see something new than to see off-spec loot whores taking more crap for their third set of gear.

We are set to start the PTR headaches this weekend. We are hoping to get a lot of experience in Ulduar under our belt fairly quickly considering the guilds that we have partnered with on the PTR. We plan to share our learnings on the podcast, and hash out ideas on the blog. So, if you have any PTR raiding guild type of questions, please feel free to ask away!

Share your PTR experiences, PROS and CONS,
or pose a 3.1 question to our PTR raid group at

    Ready for big-boy Naxx?

December 15, 2008 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - PVE, Profession Discussion, Raiding, User Interface

Stompalina hit 80 about a week ago now, nearly a month after a majority of my guild. The late start on raiding has required a bit of planning and preparation on my part to ready me for jumping right into raiding. Here are a few points that have helped me obtain my goals this week:

    Gear Check
In my quest to research gear I came across a wonderful listing of pre-raid gear posted by our friends at Elitist Jerks. And, knowing what an organized freak I am, I reworked the listing into one that can be sorted by instance/boss/etc – here. The listing is a great resource for scoping out instances with gear upgrades, along with important quest rewards and gear obtained by collecting Emblems of Heroism – all of which are helpful in preparing for raiding.

    Game Face
Another important piece of the raiding puzzle left to be reconfigured and prepared is my raiding UI (user interface). As with most add-ons, WOTLK totally put the shut down on compatibility for my pretty raiding UI. Since release I have been slowly resetting my raiding UI with new add-ons that are wrath-compatible, and keeping them current is now very easy-breezy with the Curse Client.

Setting up your UI for raiding is important, not just to look pretty, but to maximize your on-screen real estate. As a healer, it is easy to get bogged down in looking at bars going up and down. Unfortunately, that is only half the battle of being a good healer. The other half is being aware of your surroundings and being about to react quickly. To further maximize view perspective, there is a simple macro that adds additional camera area between you and your character. It is a must for any raider!

    Skirmish Raiding
PVP raiding is an excellent way to get back into the swing of raid healing. Once you get used to the fact that you are destined to die (a lot), you can use the raid to set up your raid frames, as well as use and test your key bindings and clique combinations for both offensive and defensive spells. Additionally, PVP is an opportunity to work on personal-defensive reaction times (barkskin, war stomp, etc). Keeping yourself alive with quick reaction time is just as importing as shiny green numbers.

    Secondary Skillz
As lame as most people think it is, cooking and fishing are a vital part of the game. And, to fully be prepared for raiding, most people are required to provide self-buffs including food. Unless you have a crutch buddy who is willing to cook for you every couple of days, it is almost absolutely necessary to level cooking to provide your buff food. The new cooking dailies are quick and nearly painless to get done on a frequent basis. The best part about the new cooking quests is that you are able to select the newly obtainable recipe that benefits you the most from the get-go by using your Dalaran Cooking Awards.

All in all, I have put about a week now into gearing up via craftables and drops, and I entered Heroic Naxxramas tonight with my guild. It was nearly painless, and I was able to contribute with much needed healing. From here, I still have a bit of catching up to do, but being prepared and dedicated lends itself to being able to post the numbers needed to be a successful raiding guild in Wrath.
